On
Sunday Kellington residents joined their two Councillors,
Mary and John McCartney to 'spring clean' the village and
neighbouring woods.
Councillor Mary McCartney (third right in the picture) said,
'We now have a group of residents who keep the village clean
on a regular basis, so this year for our 'spring clean'
we decided to focus on Kellington woods where we have Spring
wild flowers, Wood Anemones, Celandine and Bluebells. We
were really pleased when we had finished because the wood
looks a picture, with the flowers and not litter and flytipping
on display' |

Yorkshire Day, Saturday, 1st August, 2009, was celebrated in
Kellington with a special day at the now completely renovated
Village Hall with a collection of stalls selling Yorkshire produce.
Much more than just a mini farmers' market, it was a very enjoyable
social occasion, where villagers could sit over a cup of tea
or coffee and a biscuit to chat while they shopped, and it was
very well attended.
There
was a good cross section of stalls, including a butcher specialising
in beef from Dexter cattle, who was also selling hot sandwiches,
a cheese stall, a pie stall, a stall selling delicious jams,
jellies and chutneys, a home made cake stall, a vegetable and
flower stall, a confectionary stall, a bric a brac stall and
outside, a fish stall. There was also a tombola and raffle,
and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance were represented too.
The
whole event was so successful that the Parish Council will be
following this event up by organising a Farmers' Market on the
1st Saturday of every month, between 9am and 1pm, beginning
on Saturday, October 3rd. It will include stalls selling meat,
fish, cheese, pies, cakes, confectionary and vegetables.
In
addition, the fish stall will be outside the village hall every
Tuesday between 1.15 pm and 2.15 pm.
Any
vendor who wishes to participate in the market please contact
Councillor Bray

NATURE
NOTES - DECEMBER 2009
The
holly and the ivy
When they are both full grown
Of all the trees that are in the wood
The holly bears the crown.
O. the rising of the sun
And the running of the deer
The playing of the merry organ,
Sweet singing in the choir.
This
might sound a little unseasonable, but my first topic
this month is about ladybirds.
Around
mid-November I received a call from a lady in Kellington
telling me she had seen scores of ladybird larvae on
and around her garden seat. This is something that normally
occurs around June/July so I went to have a look the
following day (with camera of course!) and sure enough
the ugly little things were crawling about all over
the garden seat and a nearby planter. To call them ugly
seems a bit unkind, but the larvae stage of the ladybird
really is when they're at their ugliest.
I
think I could write a couple of pages about this, but
to avoid the danger of boring readers out of their minds,
I'll try and keep it brief! The cycle usually begins
in spring with, of course, the eggs which hatch after
about 1 week. The larvae stage lasts about 3 or 4 weeks
(during which time they could consume 400/500 aphids).
Then come the pupae (chrysalis) which takes about a
week to reconstruct to adult form. They actually emerge
fully grown, but their bodies are very moist and soft
and therefore vulnerable. However, they soon dry and
harden.
It
was very surprising to see these, but as with other
species, our changing climate - along with factors such
as weather, length of hibernation, availability of food,
humidity, etc. - all affect the processes. It's very
fascinating.
Several
deer were spotted during November, but I think it's
perhaps best not to give the exact location - due to
the amount of shooting going on in this area (some of
it almost certainly illegal). A fox was also seen -
in Kellington village in broad daylight - obviously
seeking food. So many thanks to the people who have
given me this information - it's nice to be able to
write about local goings-on in the nature world rather
than just giving general seasonal info.
Can
I take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy
Christmas and New Year.
